MOM CALLS THIS little cactus “Hens and Chickens”. It’s considered an heirloom plant by many since it’s so easy to grow and share. We ask about it in the Spring when sparkling dewdrops charm our care, inviting mother’s knowing response: “that’s from your great-grandmother’s courtyard”, or “I took that clipping from the spiritual garden at the church where your father and I married,” as if she’d already told you 100 times and you just didn’t hear before. It’s Latin name is Sempervivum, which means “live forever”.
